About Camping on Drummond Island

Camping on Drummond Island, your first step to adventure!

First, you get to catch “the ferry” which departs from Detour Village & takes roughly 10-15 minutes to cross the St. Mary’s River to Drummond Island.

Drummond Island is a rather large Island (87,000 acres) off the Eastern end of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It’s an Island with a rich history that, at one time, housed a British For, “Fort Drummond”, that was abandoned in 1828.

ABOUT OUR NAME

The name "butter & grahams" holds a heartfelt significance as it pays homage to my grandparents.

Their home was a sanctuary for me, & holds a treasured place in my heart. It was there that my deep connection to the land & the environment took shape.

My grandmother's cupboard always held a stash of graham crackers, accompanied by a plate of soft, velvety butter placed conveniently nearby. It was then that I discovered the sheer delight of indulging in a graham cracker generously slathered with that delectable, creamy butter. This simple treat became my go-to pleasure, carrying with it the sweet nostalgia of their home to this very day. It is for this reason that I chose to bestow the name "butter & grahams" upon this property, in honor of the two individuals I hold in the highest regard—my cherished grandparents. They were the ones who provided me with a space to embark on adventures, to learn about nature & the intricate ecological tapestry of the land, to roam freely through the enchanting woods, & to revel in the joys of playing in the creek.

Growing up with the privilege of visiting their home was truly a blessing & a gift. It is my utmost hope that this property, "butter & grahams," presents you with the same opportunity for wondrous escapades & unforgettable experiences camping on Drummond Island. May it be a sanctuary where you, too, can forge lasting memories & discover the boundless beauty of nature.

ABOUT THE LAND

Camping on Drummond Island

Our quest for the perfect piece of land was guided by two essential criteria: it had to evoke a profound & indescribable "feeling" upon arrival, and it had to boast a picturesque waterfront.

When we turned onto S. Dix Point Road, that elusive "feeling" immediately enveloped us, assuring us that we had found something truly special. Nestled amidst tranquil woods & embraced by state-owned land, this location proved to be an idyllic haven.

As we ventured further into the property, that profound "feeling" intensified. We stumbled upon a breathtaking shoreline adorned with fossils & an array of mesmerizing rock formations, overlooking the majesty of the St. Mary's River—an integral shipping route connecting the vast expanse of Lake Superior to the shimmering beauty of Lake Huron. The "feeling" that had captivated us from the moment we arrived only grew stronger.

Countless hours were spent immersing ourselves in the offerings of the land, encountering deer & hearing the melodies of nature. It was then that the essence of this land, its genius loci, beckoned to us with undeniable allure. Knowing in our hearts that we had discovered the future home of "butter & grahams", our vision of camping Re imagined, we pursued its acquisition. A few months later, 34502 S. Dix Point Road became ours.

Overflowing with excitement about this extraordinary adventure that lies before us, & we are eager to share every enchanting moment with you.

We are thrilled for this adventure & cannot wait to share the experience of camping on Drummond Island!
